When
outdoors, keep the following recreation tips in mind: |
Respect Wildlife
Observe wildlife from a distance that they consider safe. Use binoculars, spotting scopes, and telephoto camera lenses to get a closer look. A car or drifting canoe makes a good viewing blind. If animals stop eating, look at you with heads up or ears pointed toward you, or if they appear nervous or "skittish" when you move or make a noise, you are definitely too close for their comfort. Either sit down quietly or move slowly away until their behavior relaxes.
If you
are watching wildlife, limit your observation time, just as you would
limit your time visiting a friend or relative. If you are hunting wildlife,
be sure you have honed your shooting skills before going afield. Ethical
hunters make every attempt to make a clean and killing shot and recover
game once it is down. They also are aware of what is beyond their target
to prevent accidents or injuries.
Feeding wildlife can be harmful... to them and to you! Animals that become accustomed to receiving handouts, such as in a campground, tend to frequent these areas. Hand-fed animals can become aggressive or annoying to people. Migratory birds may tend to stay longer in the winter when they really would be better off in southern climates. And mammals that hibernate may not gain the proper weight due to the poor nutrition which most human handouts provide.

Respect Others
Respect the space of other visitors who may be visiting the same area as you. Hunters, trappers, anglers, hikers, nature photographers, and wildlife watchers have equal rights to visit and use camps, parks and other recreational places. Tolerance of other recreationists will help avoid conflicts and will help make everyone's outdoor recreation experience fulfilling. |
Respect the Land
Public lands are owned by you and every other visitor. These lands and the wildlife roaming in, on or over the land are held in trust for all citizens and future citizens. Some portions of some properties may be posted as "Wildlife Refuges." These sanctuaries are intended to give wildlife a safe place to rest without disturbance from people. Entry into these posted lands is restricted according to the dates posted.
Leave wildlife habitat in a better condition than you found it. Most wildlife management areas do not have formal hiking trails and you are free to roam the area at will. In areas with more developed facilities, please stay on the trails to avoid trampling sensitive wildflowers or other vegetation. Litter can be very harmful to wildlife. Please pick up litter that you find at any property and take it out with you. |
